Incredible Years, Incredible Families Offers Parents Support

Raising kids isn’t always easy but a parents’ support program being held at Neithercut Elementary in Flint hopes to help. About a dozen parents attended the Incredible Years, Incredible Families two-hour event organized by Genesee Health Plan Community Health Worker, Roderick Lenoir.

“What we are trying to create is an atmosphere that is unlike any other for a school event. We want to serve our parents. We want to be there in an effort to make things a little bit lighter for them,” says Lenoir. “I take a little bit of time to put the special touch on it so that when they walk through the door they will see something that is not normal when it comes to a parent group.”

Families enjoyed music and a taco salad meal during the first part of the meeting. After dinner, students were taken to another room allowing the educational portion of the program for parents to begin.

“I know it’s only been two weeks, but I noticed a difference in myself,” said parent Lisa Miller.

“It’s good to have tools that I can use.”

Jessica Knopp, a Behavioral Health Clinician with Easter Seals led the group and encouraged parents to discuss the techniques being shared during the lesson. Spending quality time with your children was the topic covered during their last gathering.

“I think it’s important, not just so they get a break but it’s also nice for them to engage with other adults and hopefully pick up a couple of parenting tools along the way,” says Knopp.

The Incredible Years, Incredible Families meets every Tuesday from 4:00pm – 6:00pm through the end of May at Neithercut Elementary. The school is located at 2010 Crestbrook Lane, Flint. It is open to all parents who have students attending the school and community members with children ages 6 to 12.
