GHP is proud to congratulate our Community Health Worker, Maria Crothers, on her nomination for the Voices for Children’s 2024 Caring Adult Award! Maria was nominated for her her dedication to and support of the students and families of Potter Elementary. Maria has served as a mentor to over 30 students at Potter Elementary through the Community Education Success Mentoring program, educating them on the importance of attending school every day while also being a support system for them to turn to in times of need. In addition to meeting with her mentees weekly, Maria is ready and willing to help any student at Potter with math, reading, or listening to them when they need someone to confide in.
Maria has also become someone that Potter parents can depend on, hosting an annual baby shower for expectant mothers, and, as a member of the Student Access Team at Potter Elementary, connecting parents with resources they need to support their families. In addition to these programs, Maria takes her love for learning a step further by creating the “Healthy Me” program for her students. During this program, students learn the importance of hygiene and how to be healthy. Students participating in the program are also provided with necessary hygiene items donated by community organizations in Genesee County.
Due to her love for her students, compassion for others, and determination to see children succeed, Maria has become a trusted and reliable source of support for Potter students and their families. She is always looking for a way to take her generosity a step further, going so far as to volunteer her time on nights and weekends to assist with tutoring and afterschool programs. Genesee Health Plan is honored to have had Maria working in Flint Schools since 2017 and will continue to support her efforts to help Genesee County students succeed. Maria, along with other nominees, will be honored at the annual Children’s Champion Award Banquet, hosted by the Voices for Children Advocacy Center.
