Coreena Storms, Fenton
The holiday season of 2009 was anything but joyful for 57-yea
r-old Fenton resident Coreena Storms. She was notified that she was losing her job as an Internet Manager at a car dealership. That same week in early December, she tragically lost her sister in a car accident.
“Her name was Anita. It was really tough. It was a tragic situation. I was just kind of trying to digest everything and the holidays were coming.” Storms decided to enroll in school but still found herself unemployed a month later.
“I was talking with some friends and I told them, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do. I have thyroid disease and I take a very expensive drug, the natural one.” Storms had tried non-natural types of medication but had a negative reaction to them. Luckily, one of those friends suggested Genesee Health Plan to her.
“I looked up the information, went to the office, and bam! I was taken care of. It was so easy. It truly was fabulous. Everyone was so nice and so encouraging. I felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off me. To have insurance that I knew I could now manage my thyroid medication and maintain my health meant so much.”
Coreena was on the Plan for about two years and today is employed and has health insurance through her job. But she doesn’t forget how GHP was there during her most desperate time.
“During those two years, you know things come up. A couple of times I got sick and I was able to go to the doctor and it was convenient and I’m still going to those same doctors today. I was able to be taken care of without the stress of wondering how am I going to afford this.”
