FLINT, Mich. – Genesee Health Plan (GHP) announced today that it was designated to be the lead agency by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to connect low-income Genesee County women with life-saving breast and cervical cancer prevention resources. The funding will help GHP execute the Michigan Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program (BCCCNP) and the WiseWoman Program in Genesee County.
“Genesee Health Plan plays a vital role in connecting underserved women to life-saving health services that prevent breast and cervical cancer,” said Linda Gibson, Director of Operations at GHP. “These programs will allow us to identify and assist women who have not had access to proper screenings and care, and ensure they are receiving the treatment they need.”
For the BCCCNP, Genesee Health Plan will connect low-income Genesee County women to breast and/or cervical health services. GHP Health Navigators will also identify barriers to these services, provide navigation and assist women in receiving breast and/or cervical health screenings and follow up services.
Through the WiseWoman Program, Genesee Health Plan will provide chronic disease risk factor screening and healthy lifestyle behavior support to low-income women in Genesee County. The GHP Health Navigator team will help identify and communicate risk factors for cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes, encourage healthy lifestyle choices, and address health equity and social justice issues with targeted outreach to underserved populations.
“GHP already covers preventive services such as gynecological screenings and health risk reduction services, and these programs are a great complement to what we already offer,” said Gibson. “The BCCCNP and the WiseWoman Program will provide additional services that GHP doesn’t cover, which will help more women make healthy lifestyle changes and ultimately save lives.”
Both BCCCNP and the WiseWoman Program launched in September and are also supported by the Genesee County Health Department and the National Kidney Foundation.
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, GHP will also talk about the importance of breast and cervical health during tomorrow’s ABC 12 News Medical Minute segment at 4 p.m. For more information about the BCCCNP and WiseWoman Program, call 844.232.7740.
