Historical Milestones

  • 2003-2004: Early development foundation grants; U of M Flint Partnership-primary care capacity.
  • 2005-2007: $1.7 million in expansion grants.
  • 2006: Genesee County Health Care Services property tax millage passes.
  • 2007-2014: $500,000 annual mental health grant begins from Genesee Health System.
  • 2008: GHP Becomes Triple Aim site.
  • 2010: URAC Best Practices Award – first ever national award for plan covering uninsured.
  • 2012-2014: Genesee County Health Care Services property tax millage renewed through 2019; Plan A ends; Healthy Michigan Expansion begins.
  • 2015: Pinnacle Award Recipient for Best Business Practices awarded by Michigan Association of Health Plans.
    • Founding President and CEO, Linda Hamacher, retires. Jim Milanowski named new President and CEO.
  • 2015-present: GHP partners with Crim Fitness Foundation and C.S. Mott Foundation for the Community Education Initiative.
    • 2016 Genesee Health Plan provides Community Health Workers in all Flint Schools under initiative.
  • 2016-2020: GHP launches Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Program, initially funded by a grant through Michigan Health Endowment Fund.  Program is now funded through Flint Recast.
  • 2016-present: GHP becomes designated site in Genesee County for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Navigation Program and Wisewoman Chronic Disease Management Program through the State of Michigan.
  • 2018-present:
    • Genesee County Health Care Services property tax millage renewed through 2025.
    • GHP launches Senior and Veteran’s Dental Program.
    • GHP launches Veteran’s Health Navigation Program in partnership with Ascension Genesys Hospital.
  • 2019-present:
    • GHP with support from partners: Ascension Genesys Hospital, Consumers Energy, and Huntington Bank launches “emPOWER Genesee”, a program that helps Genesee County residents and families connect with utility assistance and resources, financial assistance, health care resources and enrollment, and additional community resources while they pay their utility bills.
    • GHP receives a federal Navigator Cooperative Agreement Award from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to enroll uninsured residents of Genesee, Saginaw and Bay counties into the Healthcare.Gov Marketplace.
    • GHP receives Medicaid Outreach grant from the Genesee County Health Department (GCHD) to provide health care coverage enrollment into Medicaid (Healthy Michigan Plan) for Genesee County residents who qualify.
    • GHP receives Healthy Start grant from Genesee County Health Department (GCHD).
    • GHP receives grant from the Greater Flint Health Coalition (GFHC) to enroll families and children into Medicaid (Healthy Michigan Plan), through the “Connecting Kids to Coverage” program.
  • 2020:
    • GHP receives Census education grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to educate Genesee County residents on the importance of census completion.
    • GHP receives Michigan Health Endowment Fund’s 2020 Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles Grant to provide cooking classes to Genesee County women that are members of the WISEWOMAN program for healthy lifestyle coaching.
    • GHP receives the Tuuri Health Fund grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to add outreach efforts to the deaf and  hard of hearing community for the GHP Multicultural System of Care Program.
    • GHP receives the Tuuri Health Fund grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint to conduct bilingual/multi-cultural cooking classes for Genesee County women that are members of the WISEWOMAN program for healthy lifestyle coaching.
    • GHP receives ACCESS Coronavirus RRIN grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
    • GHP receives grant from the Greater Flint Health Coalition for CASES (Earned Income Credit) program enrollment.
  • 2021: GHP receives Vaccine Hesitancy Grant from the Genesee Community Health Center to provide education and resources to those about COVID-19 and other immunizations.
  • 2022: GHP receives grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint for REACH, and National Network to Innovate for COVID and Adult Vaccine Equity to provide education and community resources for those seeking COVID-19 vaccines, boosters and safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2023:
    • GHP receives grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint for REACH, and National Network to Innovate for COVID and Adult Vaccine Equity to provide education and community resources for those seeking COVID-19 vaccines, boosters and safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    • GHP was among 10 nonprofits that received a one-time grant fund of up to $2 million from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) to create or expand programming that lifts Michiganders out of poverty.
    • GHP receives grant from the GISD and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to bring awareness to Flint schools regarding STI testing, vaping, and childhood/adolescent immunizations. 
  • 2024: 
    • GHP receives MDHHS Innovative Cardiovascular Heart Health Grant to educate and identify members at risk for hypertension and assist with blood pressure monitoring
    • GHP receives American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding from City of Flint to act as Fiduciary in providing funding to community partners to expand their services and capacity
