Non-profit group will get more health care resources in Flint public schools

A Michigan non-profit group will provide more healthcare resources for Flint public schools.

The Genesee Health Plan is expanding its Community Health Workers program to all Flint Community Schools. The program wants to identify the health care needs of students and families in the community.

Jim Milanowski is the president and C.E.O. of the health plan.

“These folks in these schools and in the community really need assistance in trying to navigate all the resources that are out there,” Milanowski says. “The biggest message statewide is if you don’t have healthcare insurance, there are options available for children and adults as well,” he says.

Milanowski says asthma and allergies are the most common health problems he sees in kids.

The program will be paid for through a $2.9 million grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation.

Officials at the health plan say the ongoing water crisis didn’t spur the initiative, but it has helped people realize the importance of community healthcare options.

The initiative began in four schools last year, working with more than 2,800 children and 1,600 adults.
