GHP: Shoes That Fit

December 19, 2017

Christmas came a little early for some Flint students, thanks to the generosity and help of volunteers during the 17th Annual “Shoes That Fit” event at Northwestern High School.  Several GHP Community Health Workers along with other volunteers spent the morning of Friday, December 15th, sorting socks and shoes that will be delivered to elementary school kids throughout the Flint Community School district.

“About 35% of each elementary school population of students are selected by staff to receive shoes and socks for the Winter,” says Earnest Stewart, Director of Student Services at Northwestern High School.   About 100 volunteers helped sort the items including high school students who needed community volunteer hours and seven GHP Community Health Workers. “We want to make sure we are out there representing GHP,” said Sherika Finklea, GHP Community Health Worker Coordinator.

“There was a student whose pair of shoes had lights on them and he just smiled from ear to ear!”, said Tanya Jefferson, GHP Community Health Worker. “It’s nice to be a part of the over all effort of serving the families of Flint Community Schools,” adds Finklea.

Hundreds of shoes were then transported from Northwestern High School to the various elementary schools in Flint.
