Future Miracle League Field Planned
Mundy Township—After years of planning, construction is under way at the new Hill Road Park in Mundy Township, located at 1286 W. Hill Road, Flint, Michigan, 48507.
The new park was first proposed in 2013 as part of a recreation plan created by the township. Through a bond proposal in 2018, the Township launched a capital improvement plan that included the installation of several improvements to the Hill Road Park property. Those improvements include a walking path, water supply, sanitary sewer, lighting and storm sewer improvements.
The bond also allowed for safety enhancements in the Township which included the acquisition of a new fire truck and associated equipment to add to the fleet as part of emergency services in the community.
“Today is an important step in improving the quality of life for the citizens of Mundy Township and surrounding areas,” said Chad Young, Mundy Township Manager. “The bond initiative supported by residents allows for increased safety with the new fire truck, as well as a heightened focus on health and well-being with the creation of a new, inviting recreational area that will benefit the community for years to come.”
A driveway, parking lot, and approximately two miles walking path will be installed during the first phase of construction. The walking path will be created out of accessible materials that will be conducive to walkers, runners, bikes, and wheelchairs.
Mundy Township hopes to include sports fields for baseball and soccer activities in future phases of development. Also slated for the new park is a designated portion of land for the creation of Genesee County’s first full-accessible baseball field for people of all abilities.
For the last four years, Mundy Township has worked in partnership with the Miracle League of Greater Flint (MLGF). MLGF is a non-profit, registered 501 (c) 3 organization affiliated with the national Miracle League. The purpose of the Miracle League is to create fully accessible baseball fields for all children in communities across the country and around the world. There are nearly 300 fields in existence today. In Michigan, there are currently six Miracle League fields in operation.
Fundraising for the new MLGF field is underway. To date, approximately $100,000 of a $400,000 goal has been raised for the new field. Donors include private citizens, local businesses, large corporations, and foundations.
“Creating a level playing field for kids in Genesee County is an urgent need,” said Brian Caine, Miracle League Director. “We want to ensure that equal access to recreational activities is available to all residents, and the new Miracle League field is an important step toward that goal. The support this project has received from the community has been outstanding, but we have more work to do so we can add an important element to the beautiful new Hill Road Park.”
The initial phase of the park is scheduled to open in late Fall 2019.
