Seven growing careers in health care and health related sciences!

In the City of Flint, heath care workers play an important role — especially as the city continues to cope with the effects of the Flint water crisis. While many students initially consider the paths of becoming a doctor or nurse, there are many other important roles in health care that students can consider.

1. Environmental Health Specialists

Environmental Health Specialists are focused on public health. They work with health departments and companies to address pollution that affects our water, food, air and more.

2. Respiratory Therapists

From asthma to emphysema to COVID-19 complications, respiratory therapists play an important role in treating patients who are experiencing lung-related conditions and difficulty breathing.

3. Speech Therapists

Speech therapists, also known as speech-language pathologists, help children and adults in both schools and hospitals. They can specialize in a broad range of areas, helping people who have speech issues and swallowing disorders due to developmental delays, autism, strokes, brain injuries and more.

4. Dental Hygienists

Preventative dental care is an important part of staying healthy. Dental hygienists work with dentists to clean teeth and monitor patients for oral diseases because oral health is connected to overall health.

5. Behavioral Health Specialists

Behavioral Health Specialists provide counseling and direction to patients dealing with challenges such as addiction, physical limitations and mental illness.

6. Radiologic and MRI Technicians

These talented technicians help physicians diagnose conditions by performing X-rays and MRI scans.

7. Occupational Therapists

Whether they are in a nursing home or in a school, occupational therapists help injured and disabled patients improve skills for daily living.
