Health Coverage for American Indians and Alaska Natives

WELCOME!

This page is a resource for those who are members of a federally recognized tribe or shareholder of the Alaska Native Claims Act (ANCSA). Here, you will find information and resources available to you for your health care coverage needs.

GHP/phone lines are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Genesee Health Plan (GHP) is open to the public for in-person, virtual, and over-the-phone appointments. To schedule an in-person, virtual, or over-the-phone appointment, please call 844-232-7740 and select option 0 for the operator. GHP can assist people living in Genesee, Bay, and Saginaw counties. Enrollment is FREE, there is never a cost to you for our services.

The Health Insurance Marketplace® benefits American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) by providing opportunities for affordable health coverage through Marketplace health insurance plans, Medicaid, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

HealthCare.Gov Marketplace:

  • You can enroll into a HealthCare.Gov Marketplace plan year round. If you are an American Indian or an Alaska Native, you can enroll at any time and change your plan up to once a month
  • If your income is between 100-300% of the Federal Poverty Level, you can enroll in a “zero cost sharing” plan where you would have ZERO out of pocket costs (deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance) when you receive care.
    • You may qualify for tax credits that lower your premiums based on your income.
  • You can get (or keep getting) services from the Indian Health Service, tribal health programs (also known as tribal 638 programs or tribal health clinics), or urban Indian health programs
    • If you get services from an Indian Health Care Provider, you won’t have any out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, or deductibles, regardless of your income. (This benefit also applies to Purchased and Referred Care.)
  • You can also get services from any providers on the Marketplace plan

Medicaid/Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP):

If you’re eligible for services from the Indian Health Service (also known as an Indian hospital or Public Health Service (PHS)), tribal health programs (also known as tribal 638 programs or tribal health clinics), or urban Indian programs (known as I/T/Us), including Contract Health Services:

  • You don’t have to pay Medicaid premiums or enrollment fees
  • You don’t have to pay out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles for Medicaid services
  • In CHIP, you don’t have any out-of-pocket costs

Certain Indian resources and payments aren’t counted for Medicaid and CHIP eligibility, making it easier for some people to qualify. You can continue to get services through an I/T/U even if the I/T/U is not a provider in your program’s managed care network.

Applicants may need to provide documentation of U. S. citizenship. The following documents meet the requirements:

  • A document issued by a federally recognized tribe indicating tribal membership
  • An enrollment card
  • A certificate of degree of Indian blood issued by the Bureau of Indian Affairs
  • A tribal census document
  • Any document indicating affiliation with the tribe
  • Medicaid and CHIP agencies may accept an individual’s attestation regarding Indian status. If the Medicaid or CHIP agency requires documents, American Indians and Alaska Natives may need to prove Indian status or eligibility for services from an Indian health provider
