Michigan Faith in Action (MFA) is building a faith based movement to transform Michigan. MFA brings people of faith, institutions and organizations together to build community and to address the root causes and results of poverty, violence and division. As an organization that is deeply committed to the fundamentals of community organizing, our issue agenda arises directly from the people in the communities we organize. These issues arise through extensive listening campaigns, where leaders are trained not only to listen to their fellow congregants, but also their friends, neighbors, and other community members.

Through these listening campaigns we have developed an issue agenda that is centered on concrete, material improvements that will directly affect ordinary Michiganders’ lives in a positive way. Our campaigns have included work not only in health and the Flint Water Crisis but education, civic engagement, voter registration, safe communities and affordable housing as well. We then move these campaigns into spaces where ordinary people take the lead in creating policies that become real community change.

The North Flint Neighborhood Action Council (NFNAC) takes the “long view” on what will be required to develop a healthy community that is economically strong and culturally vibrant. Creating safe neighborhoods with economic opportunities for all, including Flint’s youth, will require many people and many different types of people to link, align, and leverage their work. Inclusive dialogue and effective collaboration are only possible when there are networks and spaces that bring diverse members of the community together to identify shared priorities, develop local knowledge about assets and challenges, and apply that knowledge to designing strategies that can make progress on the issues that residents care about.

Raising awareness of the plight of the North End of Flint while engaging, equipping and empowering its residents to ‘be the change’ they are looking for is at the heart of the NFNAC’s work. Research and experience show that individuals and families do better when they live in strong and supportive communities.

  • Convening residents to take action
  • Strengthening the relationship between residents and community leaders
  • Bridging the gap between law enforcement and neighbors
  • Enacting violence reduction and prevention strategies
