The Genesee Health Plan (GHP) is a non-profit health organization that has provided health coverage and life-saving services to over 90,000 Genesee County residents since 2001, that’s one out of every 5 Genesee County residents who have been on the health plan. It is health coverage partially funded by the taxpayers of Genesee County through a special county-wide millage that was first passed by voters in 2006 and renewed again in 2012.
The difference between GHP and other health coverage
One of the most common questions we receive from community members is: “Is GHP the same as Medicaid or Healthy Michigan?”
The answer is no. Genesee Health Plan is not Medicaid or Healthy Michigan. Medicaid is administered by the State of Michigan and local eligibility and enrollment goes through Genesee County’s Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). MDHHS contracts with health plans like McLaren, Molina, and HAP Midwest. Healthy Michigan/Medicaid is full health insurance, including coverage for hospitalization. Healthy Michigan is the name of a Medicaid program that was created in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. It currently provides health insurance to over 35,000 Genesee County residents.
We provide quality health coverage for Genesee County residents over the age of 19 (and people over 65 who do not qualify for Medicare) who don’t have any other health coverage and meet our income requirements. This includes hard-working people – some who work two or three jobs – who don’t receive health care coverage from their employer or don’t qualify for other health coverage.
GHP pays for doctor visits, prescriptions, lab tests, x-rays, outpatient mental health services, dental visits, and some outpatient procedures and surgeries. It is not insurance, as GHP does not cover some services like hospitalization and emergency room visits. GHP is an independent health care organization and is not part of city, county, or state government. You can enroll in GHP at our office located at 2171 S. Linden Road in Flint, between Gordon Food Service and McDonald’s.
